What We’re Up To

We have been working for about a decade on various relationships, partnerships, connections, and conversations.

Potluck Sharing Circles

Once a month, we gather over food to connect. We meet at Highlands Community League Hall (6112 113 Ave NW, Edmonton) at 5:30 pm. We each bring food to share and an open heart. Exact dates of the potlucks may be found on the events page.

Typically we have a discussion theme (eg. favourite summer holiday memory, hobbies we enjoy, places locally we’ve been that we love, etc). We chat about and share our experiences with the group. Sometimes we do an activity like painting on canvas or playing board games.

The goal is to connect. What we have learned is we are all the same at heart, but have different lived experiences, face different forms of adversity, and value social connection as a way to enhance and maintain well-being.

The disease of alcoholism is progressive but recovery is progressive, too.

Partnerships

We have developed partnerships with a number of social agencies. Recovery Acres is situated in Highlands and a significant to AHiH. As second-stage addiction recovery home, Recovery Acres houses people that are in active recovery. Sustained recovery from challenging life circumstances, including addiction and/or homelessness, often relies on stable housing and connectedness with neighbours and the community at large. At Home in Highlands works to provide both and believes that all people are intrinsically valuable with gifts, skills and abilities to offer a community. One of the goals of At Home in Highlands is to have adequate housing and community connection to allow for ‘graduates’ of Recovery Acres to make their homes in Highlands.

Civida (formerly Capital Region Housing) is another agency AHiH partners with. Through a pilot project with Civida, AHiH has the ability to act as intermediary for rental subsidies for the Recovery Acres residents who are moving into the community.

Conversations

Many conversations have taken place over the years. With a view to both advocating for adequate housing and building community with Recovery Acres’ residents, both formal and informal conversations have been the path forward for At Home in Highlands. The deliberate, cultivated path to create this inclusive community has led AHiH to government leaders, social agencies, neighbours, landlords, funders, and more. The conversations continue.

Community Safety & Well-Being Project
